Based in Jingdezhen, historically known as one of China’s principal centers of porcelain production, Xu Guoqin has developed an artistic practice rooted in traditional Chinese porcelain painting, particularly underglaze blue-and-white decoration.
Artistic Heritage
Xu Guoqin is recognized in art and auction archives as a third-generation inheritor of the lineage of Wang Bu (王步), the legendary "Blue-and-White Master" of Jingdezhen.
Her artistic lineage flows directly from Wang Bu through his son and second-generation successor, Wang Enhuai (王恩怀). Studio profiles record that Xu Guoqin formally studied ceramic art decoration under Wang Enhuai beginning in 1990.
As daughter-in-law to Wang Enhuai, Xu Guoqin carries forward the distinguished artistic traditions and spirit of the Wang family lineage.
Artistic Practice
Xu Guoqin is particularly associated with underglaze blue-and-white porcelain, as well as blue-and-white and copper-red decoration and other forms of underglaze ceramic painting.
Her work incorporates techniques derived from traditional Chinese painting, including the use of expressive brushwork and the mogu (没骨) painting approach, in which forms are rendered through brushwork and washes rather than conventional outlines. Published descriptions of her work emphasize the integration of Chinese painting techniques with the three-dimensional form and material qualities of porcelain. (Sohu)
Her porcelain works frequently explore subjects including flowers, birds, children, auspicious imagery, and traditional Chinese cultural themes.
